Teachers coming to England? The NHS-National Health Service a quick guide to medical coverage (Back to Top)
Can I get free health care and hospital treatment while I am in the UK?
You can have free treatment from the NHS if you are from the EEA (European Economic Area) or Switzerland, or
if you are from a country which has a "bilateral healthcare agreement" with the UK.
European Economic Area countries (EEA):
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus (Southern), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany,
Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland,
Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, UK, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Switzerland by special
arrangement.
Nationals of, and UK nationals in, the following countries:
Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Croatia, Georgia, Gibraltar, Yugoslavia i.e. Serbia & Montenegro, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan,
Macedonia, Moldova, New Zealand, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.
Residents irrespective of nationality of the following countries:
Anguilla, Australia, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Channel Islands, Falkland Islands, Iceland, Isle of Man,
Montserrat, St. Helena, Turks and Caicos Islands
To be able to obtain free NHS treatment, you need to register with a doctor. You can then register with a dentist who
accepts NHS patients (check-ups or treatment are not free, but the cost will be lower than if you are accepted as a
private patient). Eye check-ups may sometimes be cheaper if you can show that you are a NHS member (by showing your
medical card).
Even if you can have free treatment from the NHS, you will probably have to pay some charges for medicines
("prescription charges"), and for dental and optical check-ups or treatment.
If you cannot receive free treatment from the NHS, you should buy health insurance (if possible, before you arrive
in the UK).
Note that there may be some advantages in paying for private health care instead of relying on free NHS care. For
example, you may be able to receive treatment more quickly, and the quality of service may be better (for example,
a dentist providing private treatment may be able to use more expensive materials for filling your teeth).
There is a detailed guide for overseas visitors that can be found in the
Department Of Health - Overseas Visitors section.
A Guide to Work Permits
(Download
)
Below is everything you need to know about applying for a Work Permit through the British High Commission.
-
Work permits are issued by Work Permits (UK), part of the Home Office's Immigration and Nationality
Directorate. A work permit relates to a specific individual and a particular job. The work permit scheme
enables UK employers to recruit or transfer key personnel from outside the European Economic Area (EEA)
while safeguarding the interests of the resident labour force in the UK.
-
You cannot apply directly for a work permit. This has to be done on your behalf by an employer in the
UK who wishes to employ you. This means that we would have to find you a long term position in a school
in the UK that would be willing to put you on a Work permit. The Work Permit application process can
take up to 8 weeks to be completed. You will also need to ensure you allow sufficient time to meet the
visa requirements once the work permit has been approved.
-
Once you receive your Work Permit you will need to apply for an Entry Clearance Visa by completing an
online entry clearance visa application form. If you are traveling with your Spouse - He/She will also
need to complete an online entry clearance visa application form and you will need to provide proof of
your relationship (i.e. marriage certificate). If you are traveling with children – your children will
need to be added to your (the work permit holders) online entry clearance visa application form and
they also incur the same fee.
-
You will need to lodge your online entry clearance form at the British High Commission in the country
that you are a passport holder of. If you are working in another country, but hold a different passport,
you may be able to apply in that country. Please contact us for details.
-
Any application lodged will need to go through a Biometric process for application. This means that
every teacher applying for a visa will need to go into their local British Consulate for finger
scanning and digital photographs. Be prepared to answer any questions, although it is not an interview.
You will be asked to book an appointment when you lodge your visa application online.
-
The British Consulates are located in all countries for more information visit the BHC website in your
home country. For Australian teachers there are consulates in State capital cities, excluding Tasmania,
South Australia and Northern Territory. Any teachers that are in these States or in remote/rural areas
will need to arrange to travel to for this procedure. For other countries you may need to travel to get
to your closest consulate. It is advisable to research well in advance of application. Please note that
they will ONLY accept applications from persons who are entering the UK within 3 months of their
application date. For more information on NEW Biometric Data Collection for Visa applicants please visit
the Home Office UK Border Agency website.
The Biometric scan is a new process and as a result there is a high demand for appointment time slots!
You may not be able to get an appointment time when you would like to; therefore people may risk missing
flights etc. Do not book flights under any circumstances.
Teachers requiring Work Permits must wait until they receive their Work permits before applying for
their Entry Clearance (VAF2 form).
-
You will need to submit your Entry Clearance Visa application online to the British High Commission along
with posting the documents below once you have had your Biometric Scan:
- one passport size photograph
- current and any previous passports
- your original work permit
- evidence of your qualifications
- a copy of your resume/CV
- Proof of Biometric Scan
- application fee and postage
-
The cost of the Entry Clearance Visa is: Australia $490.00 AUD, America $420 USD, Canada $420 CAN, New
Zealand $540 NZD. We felt it was in your best interest to know this in good time, so that it isn't a
shock for you when you start to apply. There is also a Courier Fee of $15 to return your application.
-
If you need any help in applying for your Visa through the British High Commission please let me know
and I will walk you through the process. That offer also stands if you have any other questions that
you are not sure about regarding relocating to the UK. Please also remember that we can help you set
up a Lloyds Bank Account prior to arriving.
-
Also, if you want to return to the UK to teach again in the future on a Work Permit, then you must have
gained Qualified Teacher Status within four years of your first entry to the UK as a qualified teacher.
Please contact us if you want more information.
If you require further information please contact your local career manager on freecall 1800789400.
